 That's the beautiful American River at the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma, California, where gold was first discovered by James Marshall in 1848. We were teaching here at the new American River Acoustic Music Camp. Thank you to Bruce and Cindy Hayden for putting on a great first-year camp! As part of our ongoing Backcountry Tour of America we'll try to present a different national or state park every month. more tour photos ****** If you'll be at the IBMA conference later this month in Nashville, we hope you'll be able to catch one of our showcases. We'll have the full 5-piece band:Chris, Janet, Mason, Austin, and Christian. Here's the schedule: Tuesday night, September 26: Chris has also been nominated for Print Media Person of the Year at the IBMA for his articles appearing in Bluegrass Unlimited magazine. Look for the latest article, a cover story on Ralph Stanley, in the October issue. Also nominated are Dan Miller of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, and banjoist Bob Black for his book on his years with Bill Monroe, "Come Hither to Go Yonder." ****** We're now able to sell digital singles of all the songs from our albums from our website. Singles are in mp3 format and are only 99 cents each. We'll eventually have PDF versions of the songbooks and Janet's banjo book for sale too! One thing digital download allows us to do is that if you want to send a gift of a song to a friend or loved one, you can just email me at chris@chrisstuart.com with the song(s) you want to send someone and his or her email address and we can send that person an email with a link to download the song for free. Then I invoice you (99 cents per song) via email through paypal (although you don't need paypal to pay). It's really pretty simple and pretty cool! ****** And we got some great suggestions for the podcast which we'll have available in October. We're recording some interviews, banjo lessons, fun stuff, etc., so we'll have an announcement about that in the October newsletter. |

Janet is still on the Bluegrass Unlimited chart in September and moved up to #13 with Chris's song "Julia Belle" from her solo CD "5 South." Dale Ann Bradley has also recorded a great version on her new album "Catch Tomorrow" on Compass Records. |

Sitings Along the Mysterious Road:
• Jigs Dinner - We played up in Mt. Pearl, Newfoundland in August and had a unbelievable time up there. It's a gorgeous place and it was great jamming with Neil Rosenberg, author of Bluegrass: A History, which is now out in paperback. Those Tim Horton doughnuts aren't bad, but one of the traditional meals up there is called a Jigs Dinner which is basically vegetables (such as potatoes,turnips,parsnips, cabbage, carrots, radish pickles); turkey, chicken or roast beef; salt beef; yellow split peas (for making puddings), and turkey or chicken stuffing (made with bread crumbs, savoury, chopped onion, butter, salt and pepper). This is actually news from a while ago, but I've been listening lately to the audiobook version of the first novel in this historical fiction series Outlander, and I think the series is a great read. Diana mentions in the preface to her new novel A Breath of Snow and Ashes that she listened to our albums while writing it! |
